82% of teen pregnancies are unplanned.
Teen mothers are more likely than other young women their age to drop out of school, live in poverty and rely on government grants; and their children tend to grow up in economically and educationally disadvantaged households.
The Reality Learning SA Healthy Choices program is a unique program which combines a structured curriculum with an infant care simulation experience. The authentic child care activities allow the student to experience the actual amount of care an infant requires.
The goal of this program is two-fold:
- 1. to help young adults to realize the importance of waiting to engage in sexual activity, and thereby delay becoming a parent until they are emotionally, financially, psychologically, and socially ready to take on the heavy demands of parenting; and
- 2. to introduce the importance and variety of skills needed in caring for an infant.
